I think its about depression, and taking antidepressants pills, the way he calls them 'happy pills' help me get to that thought considering antidepressants are supposed to help you with depression, and make you feel more happy.
he's so depressed and trying to evoke emotion out of him with shopping, drugs and alcohol, but the one thing that helps is the antidepressants.
it makes him see life in color again, takes him away from the hardness, loneliness and the emptiness of his life.
