I think this song is both an end and a beginning as well. I believe this song revolves around two guys. When I say "end" i'm talking about stanzas 1-6. The lines on these stanzas, for me, is for the first guy. 1. "Love that once hung on the wall Used to mean something, (THIS COULD BE A PHOTO OF THE TWO OF THEM THAT CAPTURED A MOMENT WHERE THEY FELT THE MOST LOVE. IT COULD BE A DATE OR EVEN, DARE I SAY, A WEDDING PHOTO. REGARDLESS, THE PHOTO HUNG ON THE WALL IS(was) MEANINGFUL AND SPECIAL.) but now it means nothing (GOING BACK TO THE PHOTO, I THINK WHEN SHE SAYS "now it means nothing," SHE'S REFERRING TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP. THE PHOTO SHOWS TWO PEOPLE IN LOVE, BUT THE REALITY CAPTURES TWO STRANGERS HURTING EACH OTHER EMOTIONALLY.) The echoes are gone in the hall But I still remember, the pain of December" (THIS COULD GO TWO WAYS. 1. THEY MAY HAVE ENDED THINGS BITTERLY IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER OR 2. MAYBE THE RELATIONSHIP WASN'T ALL THAT PERFECT. DECEMBER, A MONTH OF SNOW- WHEN THE NATURE IS DEAD AND COVERED WITH COLDNESS, WHEN THE DAYS(LIGHT) ARE SHORTER AND THE NIGHTS(DARKNESS) ARE LONGER. THEIR RELATIONSHIP HAD TOO MANY FIGHTS. MAYBE, THE SO-CALLED LOVE SHE HAD FOR HIM WAS CHANGING HER SLOWLY AND THE DARKNESS(PAIN OF LOVING) WAS CAUSING HER TOO MUCH PAIN.)

  1. "Oh, there isn't one thing left you could say I'm sorry it's too late" -(MAYBE WHEN THEY HAD FIGHTS, THE GUY WOULD ALWAYS APOLOGIZE AND TELL HER SWEET THINGS TO COVER UP THE WOUND HE LEFT HER. OVER AND OVER, SHE ALWAYS FORGAVE HIM; HOWEVER, THIS TIME, THIS FIGHT THEY'RE HAVING, IT'S TAKING TOO MUCH OF A TOLL ON HER AND SHE REFUSES TO BELIEVE THE APOLOGIES SHE'LL KNOW HE'LL DO AGAIN. SHE FINALLY BREAKS UP WITH HIM.)

  2. "I'm breaking free from these memories (SHE STILL SOMEHOW CARES FOR THE GUY AND IS STUCK WITH ALL OF THE MEMORIES OF HIM THAT IMPRISONED HER FROM MOVING FORWARD. SHE KNOWS THAT THE ONLY WAY FOR HER TO SET HERSELF FREE FROM HIM IS TO LET GO OF ALL THE MEMORIES OF HIM, AND ONLY THEN WILL SHE BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD.) Gotta let it go, just let it go (THIS IS KIND OF LIKE A CHANT SHE TELLS HERSELF OVER AND OVER. IT'S HARD TO "LET GO'' OF SOMEONE WHO HAD THIS MUCH OF AN EFFECT ON HER, BUT SHE CONTINUALLY TRIES TO LET HIM GO.) I've said goodbye (GOOD BYE TO THE MEMORIES OF HIM AND TO THE LOVE SHE ONCE KNEW.) Set it all on fire, gotta let it go. just let if go" (SHE IS TRYING HARD TO ERASE THE MEMORIES OF HIM, METAPHORICALLY BURNING IT. AT SOME POINT, SHE COULD HAVE BURNT HERSELF A BIT. A MOMENT OF WEAKNESS WHERE THOUGHTS OF HIM STILL FLOOD HER AND MAYBE SHE CAN'T SEE A LIFE WITHOUT HIM. BUT SHE'S STRONG. SHE'S STILL TELLING HERSELF THAT SHE HAS TO LET IF ALL GO.)

  3. "You came back to find I was gone And that place is empty, like the hole that was left in me (MAYBE THE GUY WENT TO HER AND TOLD HER HE WANTED HER BACK THINKING THAT SHE'LL EASILY ACCEPT HIM, BUT THE GIRL HE THOUGHT WOULD ALWAYS COME CRAWLING BACK TO HIM, THE GIRL WHO HAS GIVEN HIM CHANCES OVER AND OVER AGAIN, IS GONE. IN FRONT OF HIM IS A STRONGER GIRL WHO WON'T EASILY GIVE IN ANYMORE. "THE HOLE THAT WAS LEFT IN ME" COULD MEAN THAT THE LOVE SHE HAD FOR HIM IS GONE.) Like we were nothing at all It's not that you meant to me Thought we were meant to be"

5/6. ''Oh, there isn't one thing left you could say I'm sorry it's too late

I'm breaking free from these memories Gotta let it go, just let it go I've said goodbye Set it all on fire Gotta let it go, just let it go''

  • NOW IT'S THE GUY WHO HAS A HARD TIME MOVING ON. SHE KNOWS THAT THE TWO OF THEM ARE NOT MEANT TO BE AND WILL ONLY CAUSE EACH OTHER PAIN. SHE TELLS HIM THAT SHE HAS ALREADY LET GO OF HIM AND PLEADS FOR HIM TO DO THE SAME.
  1. ''I let it go, and now I know A brand new life, down this road Where it's right, you always know So this time, I won't let go'' -SHE IS FINALLY FREE FROM HIM. SHE IS NO LONGER TRAPPED IN THE ILLUSION OF THE LOVE SHE HAD WITH HIM. BY LETTING HIM GO, SHE IS ABLE TO MEET A NEW GUY. AND WITH THIS GUY, SHE FEELS SAFE. SHE KNOWS THAT SHE CAN TRUST HIM WITH HER HEART. THIS IS THE LOVE SHE WON'T LET GO. THE LOVE SHE KNOWS IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR.

  2. ''There's only one thing left here to say Love's never too late'' -PRETTY MUCH SELF-EXPLANATORY.

  3. ''I've broken free from these memories I've let it go, I've let it go And two goodbyes, lend you this new life Don't let me go, don't let me go'' -THE ''TWO GOODBYES'' ARE FROM HER AND HER PAST LOVER. THE GOODBYE IS ABLE TO LET HER LOVE ANOTHER GUY. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN SHE'S STILL VULNERABLE, AND THE LAST TWO LINES ARE HER PLEADS TO THE NEW GUY NOT TO 'LET [HER] GO BECAUSE SHE IS FINALLY READY TO GIVE ALL HER LOVE TO HIM.

10/11. ''Don't let me go, don't let me go, don't let me go

Won't let you go, don't let me go Won't let you go, don't let me go Won't let you go, don't let me go Won't let you go, don't let me go'' -THE NEW GUY ASSURES HER CONSTANTLY THAT HE WON'T EVER LET THEIR LOVE GO. BY THE REPETITIVENESS OF THE LINES, THE GIRL MAY STILL BE FEELING VULNERABLE, BUT THIS TIME, THE GUY IS REASSURING HER THAT HE'S NOT LIKE HER PAST LOVER. HE WON'T LET GO OF SOMETHING HE KNOWS IS SPECIAL.
