I feel like this is about accepting death - since it is inevitable - and how small we all are after all. Death define us and unite us as human beings. I don't see this as a, necessarily, negative song, though.
This record and Scott Kelly's solo stuff really helped me overcome/accept my grandfather's kind of sudden death, even-though I fail to understand most of his lyrics.
