well, i see this song in many different perspectives. And I usually think by alex's point of view. I reckon by the time when he wrote it that tune he was getting really famous, and though he loved his girlfriend he wanted to break up with her to be free, and enjoy the perks of his new status.
"Curiosity becomes a heavy load, to heavy to hold, will force you to be cold"
i don't think that was about cheating, i really think this is about him getting curious, wanting to see the world and so he tried to end things by being cold hearted.
"Do me a favour and break my nose, do me a favour and tell me to go away. Do me a favour and stop asking questions'
I think he felt pretty guilty about leaving the poor girl for no reason. He just really wanted to get out of this relationship, and therefore he'd do anything to "tear apart the ties that bind".
call me crazy, but i related that song with fluorescent adolescent, and by the time those songs were released alex was ending his relationship with johanna bennett, who co-whote FA.
