@ShatteredVinyl and @Padje Actually 'The Silver Tongued Devil and I' was released in 1971, the year after Janis Joplin died (October 1970). So it could very much be about Janis Joplin's death.

I've read that he wrote this song about Janis Joplin,after being very despondent over her death and how no one realized how bad off she was.
