The way I see it, he's singing about how he feels after someone breaks his heart.
Someone broke up with him and he's incredibly hurt over it. Despite that, he still cares about the person and doesn't want to blame them for it. No matter what he's going through, life and the world around him continues moving on, but he feels like he's stuck there, drowning in his pain for this other person. He wants to move on too, put distance between this moment and be able to glance back at it from a position of safety and comfort. Yet, his heart is stubborn and doesn't want to let go yet.
