I think this song is about a girl who is bullied, or more vaguely about society and how peers can make life difficult for you if they don't like you. Here's how I read the chorus:

She's a nice, sincere person with an open heart
"The world bent down to remind her, to open her ears
Her ears to the sound
The sound of the song that would define her"
The WORLD puts her down ("bent down" as in she is LOWER than the rest of them) and puts labels on her and says mean things to/about her. People sort of determine who you are by how they perceive you to be and once they'd made their decision you are almost cast in how you're gonna live and be treated. and I guess they defined her as something bad.
