He loved his partner very deeply ,his subconscious knew the relationship would not work but he could not bring himself to believe this (he loved her too much) so instead his behaviour forced it all to end by hurting her even though he never wanted to hurt her ever.a doomed relationship where both people love each other,(they do exist and they're one of the most heart breaking experiences in this life,I know first hand.)
