I interpreted the first verse as him looking at his granddad and seeing him as a bitter man who talks about how women will use you. While he didn't believe this as a kid and pitied his granddad for generalizing women for his bad experiences with them in the past.
"When you want her lips, you get a cheek
Makes you wonder where you are
If you want some more and she's fast asleep
Leaves you twinkling with the stars."
This part seemed to me like he was with a girl, but she never wanted him like he wanted her. He tries to kiss her and she turns her cheek for him to kiss. This makes me think she's only maintaining the relationship for the benefits of his actions outside of physical encounters. Essentially, he's being used by the girl. She falls asleep on him and he's sitting there alone with the stars questioning the relationship.
He grows up and becomes the granddad and realizes that he was dumb to invest so much of himself into the girl. He wants to impart the wisdom unto his grandson, but he knows that just as he ignored his granddad's advice, his grandson will also ignore his. Thus, he says "You'll have to learn, just like me
And that's the hardest way."
