I recently listened to an interview with Neil Fallon from some social-engineering podcast (Type "Neil Fallon" into iTunes) and in that interview they asked about Neil's song-writing process. He talks about essentially being inspired by a piece of fiction, or current events to come up with his own fictional premise or story for each song he writes. When he's asked about "Animal Farm" and what it's referencing, I was shocked and surprised not to hear not that Orwell's book inspired this song, but rather an old episode of "The Twilight Zone" entitled "To Serve Man".
The episode is about a race of hyper-intelligent aliens coming down to Earth who have a book entitled "To Serve Man", and mankind believe that these space-men are there to solve all of their problems, and bring peace to their planet, only to find out much later that "To Serve Man" is actually a cookbook ("Taste's just like chicken", they say!). To be fair, I never thought Animal Farm the book never really fit well with Animal Farm the song, however this episode fits perfectly with this song.
