I have often wondered if Paul McCartney had first seen the Movie "Ryan's Daughter" staring Robert Mitchum, Trevor Howard and Sarah Miles, also released in 1970. Fool on the Hill seems to describe perfectly the character Michael from that movie, played brilliantly by John Mills. A few months after seeing that movie, I heard Fool on the Hill for the very first time and immediately thought of John Mills portrayal of Michael from Ryan's Daughter. The lyrics describe the character perfectly.

Way back when I was in high school, we did a little song interpretation section in an English class. One guy in the class theorized that "The Fool on the Hill" was LBJ. The teacher didn't buy it, but obviously it was memorable to me. So I liked the first interpretation above with the possibility...
