Funny thing here, a paradox actually. I am a heroin addict and it would take a heroin addict to describe this. But, I'm recovering (probably relapse 4 more times statistically...) and am sober for today. Here is what it means, line by line;
I bleach the sky every night - this is a reference about bleaching needles to avoid bacterial contamination.
Loaded on wrong and further from right - Obvious statement that this song isn't about anything but drugs to me. you interpret it
two howling moons - possibly a reference to the fact that day and night are the same, always dark places when you are addicted
The river is loaded I've been there today - this is a reference to one of two things, 1 the river being veins are now loaded (I'm loaded yo) 2 the fact that open air drug markets are almost always near a river (founding point of a town usually) which is also most cities down towns. i.e. Denver, Seattle, etc.. (Yes, us heroin addicts know where to score almost anywhere :)
took in some questions she does me again - Asked myself the same damn questions I ask everytime before I shoot up, "why am I doing this? When will I stop
?". She (her, heroin, female hero) does me again. Even after the questions and the mental know not to, the drug makes you do it.
I would die in your arms if you were dead too- If you died, I would die with you. In your arms. Being useless and metabolized. This one is pretty straight forward
Here comes a lie, we will always be true - This is about lying to your friends why you don't want to hang out with them and what for. Lying to people about being an addict, lying to dealers and family. Doesn't feel like it, but you slowly start lying till your whole life is a lie
Going up and coming down, scratch away way way - this is about getting high and chasing it. Scratch away is a major reference to the histamine release the opiates cause, known as the "opiate itch"
Little things that kill - Either a reference to the fact that little things (heroin) can kill. Or a reference to getting irritated and snappy at people for little things (this usually only happens to people who have more money and can stay high.
The bigger you give, the bigger you get - Reference to buying the drug. The more you give the more you get
We're boss at denial, but best at forget - Good at denying our addictions and realities, but better at forgetting about them
The cupboard is empty we really need food - this is little things about life slipping away. Forgetting to eat (caused by the nausea and constipation of opiates. this is one of two possible reference to meth. This song is undoubtedly about heroin to me, but lyrics are for you to understand.
Summer is winter and you always knew - The fact that you become numb to cold and hot. Opiates stop sweating as much and also block the feeling of cold. You always knew is a reference to the person to introduced it? Summer and winter are stored in memory for addicts the same... It's weird but true
My willy is food? Thats not right. My will is food - look it up on other sites if you don't believe. This is another reference to how the drug takes precidence over food. It's will overcomes food, sex, water, friendship...
I kill you once, I kill you again - either a reference to relapsing over and over, most addicts take 9 times to stop. Or to the ODing caused by heroin that most people don't die from. I prefer the latter
I'm addicted to love, im addicted to bullshit - The delusion that you loved the heroin in the beginning, and now hate it. It's bullshit because you do love it and hate it. It's a bullshit relationship
We are starving and crude, welcome my friend to the little things that kill - a reference to how addicts become.
@codmouse I know it was a long time ago, but TYVM for your excellent line-by-line analysis. It provides stark insight into the desolate, desperate, & grungy existence that lays in wait for those that get sucked into Her world. All these years I've heard this song, & never really understood it, until now.

@codmouse It absolutely is "My willy is food". It's in the liner of Sixteen Stone. All the lyrics are there. "I touch your mouth, My willy is food". It's cool that your interpretation of the song relates to you, but you can't change Gavin's lyrics and then reference the rest of the internet as more credible than the liner notes written by the guy that wrote the songs. #JustSaying

Also, here is what Gavin was writing about because everyone knows Gavin wasn't a needle junkie...

Songfacts: What was the lyrical inspiration behind the song "Little Things"?
Gavin: The lyrical inspiration was the simple realization of that whole thing about don't be letting the details get you down. I was always feeling encumbered by life and overtaken by life and dwarfed by life, and my feelings and my paranoias and my worries were larger than anything else. So, there was always that pain to try to keep all of those worries at bay.
That's just a song about paranoia for the future and paranoia of life. I think it has something to do with trying to be strong in the face of adversity.
@codmouse I am praying that God will heal you and deliver you from your heroin addiction. He loves you so much and you are not your addiction. You are precious and valuable in his sight NEVER forget this. God bless and keep you safe and sound in Jesus name. Amen and amen.
