I think the primary theme is the disconnection from your life that comes after falling from an apex. Everything seemed to be going great, and then the tide turns, and you're left asking yourself what exactly happened.

It's pretty obvious the person he's watching (maybe a friend or lover?) that fell from their apex is close to him, and he's trying to comfort them in their time of loss by explaining that he's also been in their situation.
