I think the song means that's she really liked the guy but not to any extent and he thought she wanted more because of what she's been through but that wasn't the case, hence "your love was never the missing piece" she just enjoyed his company she felt alive for the first time or even in a long time but he just saw differently, he thought she wanted more.
