For me this song clearly represents her issues with mental health and mental instability.when she says " I went to the doctor believing the devil had control over me" she talks about her own mental problems she might have had.I don`t know too much about her private life but for me this is the interpretation making the most sense. when she talks about the "glass balloon" she means her psyche and how she maybe let herself go to far away partying, doing drugs or whatever and how it crashed then.I think its plausible that with hermit she means either the devil or her mental illness.
@olover i believe when she speaks of going to the doctors and all that she is trying to make a statement in that she has fallen so hard over someone that she was experiencing drastic and unfamiliar feelings inside, and had sought out professional help. "Believing the devil had control over me" to me either means she's under the thumb of her own craving that she feels "possessed", or maybe even the "devil" could be Hermit the Frog, her unrequited lover. Again just my opinion though. Not trying to correct anyone just throwing my ideas out as well...
