While the writer below sought to define the whole by the parts, I will simply suggest that this could have been more of disillusionment with our modern world view, and perhaps even his own liberal modernism. The vibe might be that he is reaching back into himself for something of the past that was disregarded, something he failed to believe. I think it might be his own childhood faith, maybe that initial look at the world that says yah I believe in God. Over time the world makes us callous to being real people, and is more and more pitted against the simple truth of a immortality and heaven. I know from experience that death causes us to search for meaning beyond this life, and for deeper meaning within this life, so that is what I get out of it, is dare to "believe"
