I hate to be "that guy", but I think this song is about being on drugs. I'm not sure which kind of drug, but I think the character of the song (who could be James Mercer himself, I don't know if he uses recreational drugs) feels that everything wrong in his life is going to be alright when he's on the drug. Even though he really only feels safe in this "lazy wonderland", he still hopes that his mind comes back to him fully intact once he comes back up that rabbit hole, hence the line:

Don't know how or why
And when it wanders back I hope it's still a friend of mine
