Cover art for Electra Heart lyrics by Marina and the Diamonds

This song is about the death of Marina's character, Electra Heart. She goes through a series of transformations in four archetypes: the Idle Teen, the Primadonna, the Housewife, the Homewrecker, and the Heartbreaker. From what I can tell, this song goes through every one of them.

"I'm Electra, I'm Electra Heart Only living, living in the dark Lights, they blind me"

This concept of light and dark is featured in many songs on the album. She once craved the attention of the Limelight in Primadonna, and now loathes it. In Lies, she romances in the dark with men who don't love her.

"Can we go back, go back to the start? Where the holy father made his mark"

In Teen Idle, Electra feels suicidal; and in Fear & Loathing she wants to "touch the edge of greatness". Combined with the above lyric, it makes me think she wishes she'd never been born to make all the mistakes she has made.

"At the altar, would you pay the price? Would you give your, would you give your life?"

As stated before, Electra Heart goes through four archetypes. She could be remorseful of portraying the "perfect housewife" which had killed her inner Idle Teen, Primadonna, and Heartbreaker.

My Interpretation

i think you're right, i agree with the whole archetypes thing but i also think that the character of "Electra Heart is Marina's alter ego, i think that each song in her playlist "electra heart: the archetypes" (youtube it) goes backwards in the order they play and that each stage of her life is dying as they die the archetypes that are connected to them also die a little, until there's nothing left, i also think that there's more than one song connected to each archetype.
