Great lyrics, I think it can be interpreted on multiple levels. In my opinion the key line is "The trick is to try to be free/And tend to the void, don't just fill it." People have voids in their lives where they long for happiness, companionship, etc. and instead of digging down to the root of why they feel this way and fixing it, they try to fill these voids with (drugs, material things, girls/guys, etc.) so I think he's using the colloquialism of there's "Plenty of Girls in the Sea" to illustrate that point. He uses the lines about the surgeons not being perfect or the lifeguard not being about the muscle or tan to illustrate that typically the thing we use to temporarily fill those voids, still leave us feeling empty inside in the end, because we need to TEND to the void, not just FILL IT. When people experience heartbreak, people try to make them feel better (fill the void) by saying "well there's plenty of girls/guys in the sea" and so while this song could be about a relationship on the surface, I think it goes a bit beyond that.

I don't mean to dissect your comment because I get the point and you do have one. All humans tend to do this but it goes beyond materialism. Some people may or may not be aware of their deep rooted issues but every now and then, I think it's okay to do something to make ourselves feel a little better. Whether it be a new pair of kicks or whatever. Obviously these things don't cure us. We're not always trying to fill the void but heal it a little. No?

I'm not judging materialism or anything else for that matter. I think all of these issue are part of the human condition, that I too am guilty of, and I didn't just say materialism, it could be many things. There's "plenty" of girls in the sea. Loneliness, Depression, Insecurities, you name it, and therefore "plenty" of things we can try to fill these voids, one of which is materialism, but it could be anything...not necessarily something tangible either, such as denial? This is just my interpretation of the lyrics. I think the beauty of this...

One final clarification, yes I think a little bit of anything is okay, but not to the point of ignoring the root of your problems and therefore "filling the void and not tending to it." To your point if you want to "heal" the void...then sure, my opinion is that's okay, as long as it's not to the ignorance of the real issue...again just my opinion.
