So this seems to be about a man, who is in search for a lady companion. He needs someone to share the heaven's loads. According to himself, he is a bit of saviour, a bodhisattva, a Catcher in the Rye, but it's tough on him, so he's advertising himself. The lady also has high standards: she wants an honest man. Eventually, they get together, but he feels exposed (the staring). For he is not devoid of faults, and he is afraid he'll make them again. And in the end, he indeed seems to be making his way out.

It's difficult to go just by the lyrics having seen the excellent video clip. In here, Clarke presents Byrne with a test of character, by laying in front of his car. He passes the test, shows his looks and his moves, and after a stylistic roadside mating ritual, they get together. But we can see his self-doubt, and eventually she finds out he's kept something hidden from her - his love for the bottle. Then she walks away, as he hasn't been entirely honest.

There seems to be a bit of circularity in the clip, as if one wants to say: if you look for perfection, you'll always be dancing by the side of the road.
