Seems to me like admitting to an insecurity, being in a relationship and feeling inadequate but trying to bury that with an almost obsession with the relationship itself:

fearing that at any time the loved one will move on from you, because of your inadequacies and being almost desperate to have everything be perfect and remain just the way it is; you holding on tightly and you trying to immerse both of you in order to achieve this.

Hoping that even if your insecurities do come to fruition; where the loved one does move on or the obsessive behaviour does finally come to a head; at the very least the relationship amounted to something because of your efforts, even having a bitter sufferance is better than nothing.
