I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red.
Revelation 6:12 NIV
I don't know about most of the song, but near the end it sounds like his friend committed suicide "You worked hard, you fought the good fight
The taste of copper in a failed mouth full of broken teeth"
Any guesses?
Cory has gone to say that he likes to keep his lyrics open ended and the meaning general to avoid people from making their own interpretations. I want to say, you're definitely on the right path with Revelations. I'm still trying to pick apart the song entirely but by the sound of it, its not so much that he committed suicide.

"The taste of copper in a failed mouth full of broken teeth." That's a very elaborate way to say he bit the bullet or had to swallow his pride and his words. "And the sound of excuses" He's tromented...

"And the sound of excuses" He's tromented by what he used to believe and by the excuses he made up to keep his peace of mind when he knew the opposite was correct.
The stress and repetition of the lines "You must of felt it before you even woke up; you should of known it years ago." Leads me to believe that this song is about discovering truth and how hard it can be to accept when you've gone for so long believing the opposite. That's my overall general notion of the song.
Its beautifully written and composed. Cory really has improved on lyric writing with the last two albums. He finds such unique and interesting ways to say regular things, such as "biting the bullet." And the peaks and valleys of the song are very powerful.
I hope this Norma Jean lineup stays together for a good while. Its amazing what they've managed to produce with one album and I'd like to see another.
