I guess Dan is with someone who he is really in love with. And he knows that Dan knows (he's gay) but his partner is still pretending he loves him, even though he doesn't. Dan is asking his boyfriend why he's doing it: "Still I don't understand/Though it's there in your hands/Why you beg and you steal/For a love that isn't real" .
Dan says he will do anything for his partner "In a field by a stone/I could sit for days alone/Not a thought for myself/ Not my happiness or health/Just the fool that I love/With a push and a shove/It ain't easy to be true/ But I do it just for you" but his partner is never happy "Happiness can find us nowhere."
Despite all this, Dan still believes it will work out: " Happiness will find us somewhere."
