Ugh. I really hate these little rivalries. But anyway, I think the Beatles version, ironically, aged better. Michael's version has that really cheesy synth bass that screams 1988 while the Beatles' version has a pretty timeless arrangement. I won't argue about the energy, but I think the song was supposed to be a little more mellow.
Anyway, it was originally written as a campaign song for Timothy Leary when he wanted to run for governor of California, but that just kind-of fizzled and the Beatles just decided to record it as the first song on "Abbey Road" which was supposed to be their last album.
