I reckon Dan's lost someone to the war. He feels it's his fault, referring to the first verse "A dear heart, a small part, I could have tried more

Is a safe place, a kind face, the sweet taste I nearly died for"
And I think everybody's trying to take his mind off things but he sees them as trying to make him forget about his rested loved one. He is bold and protects the memory of his friend/ lover : "But it's too late, the locks break, I won't let them take it all away
Wrong or right, I just fight to keep my world safe"
