I think the song is two different people talking to each other. One does something bad to make the other feel bad. The other leaves, to make the first one feel bad in revenge. Then the other comes back. They both made mistakes. The first did something bad to the other. The other ran away to make the first feel worse.
When he sings the "I never felt this loss before" it sounds like "Oh you never felt this lost before". Seems like the other talking to the first one after they ran away.
After that, he says "I never wanted anything more". After they run away they are happy that they can inflict pain on the first.
But it was both of them that made mistakes. It's like a cycle of hurting and loving. Don't let me make the same mistake again.
