Supercrush! Lyrics

I'd like to interpret the "By a Thread" version of Supercrush! which differs a little from its studio companion. First off, the tone of the music, switching between a haunting melody and explosive riff. While a contemplative song, it also holds elements of both whimsy and plain old recklessness. The melody says "Think, contemplate, philosophize, but don't forget your humanity!" Now, onto the lyrics.

"So the time is right, so tell me if you wanna? You should change it if you're gonna But I don't really know how... I've already tried... INVOLVE."

This verse seems to be about indecision, especially the first three lines. However, it makes a snap decision in the end, representing a decision in the person, and by the emphasis, a final one. As for the choice of word "INVOLVE" for the so-called 'decision' of the verse, it points to the idea to incorporate debate, but not let it bog you down from making a decision.

"I don't want to save my soul now I just want to lose control And even if it takes a lifetime to learn I'll learn."

Yes, in the live version, the lyrics change to 'I JUST want to lose control'. And that skews the meaning of the entire song. 'I don't want to save my soul' is a rejection of religion (not spirituality), which many of Devin's songs incorporate. 'I just want to lose control', points to the idea that he want to let go, entirely, and not hold back himself anymore. Not to lose control in a negative fashion, but to not let the control that peers pressure on you BE you. 'And even if it takes a lifetime to learn, I'll learn'. This line shows his determination that, no matter what, he will be an individual and not allow himself to be judged by his peers.

"Don't fall in line... If you're thinking that you're gonna... You should maybe think about a reason in your own mind... You've already gone! EVOLVE."

'Don't fall in line...if you're thinking that you're gonna You should maybe think about a reason in your own mind'

These lines are about the pressure to fall into peer pressure, or into line. It also says 'if you think you're gonna...think about a reason..." This is hinting at, or saying outright, that if you want to be in the crowd, just another guy or girl in a faceless sea, then you need to think of a reason in YOUR mind. Not to take the opinions of others, but to form your own.

"You've already gone! EVOLVE."

The 'You've already gone" is a shout from him to those who have already given to peer pressure just to be part of the crowd. Where the 'EVOLVE' is a cry for them to become better than that, to rise above the crowd and decide for themselves where to stand.

"Here now, see friends, Hear our defense, Heroes' time gone by."

This is almost a continuation of the idea of the previous verse. This could be the words from the mouth of some people who have risen above the crowd, who have 'evolved' as it were, and want their former friends to join. They call out the 'heroes' their old friends worshipped by call them by gones.

"Here's our descent, Hero's defense, Heroes left you to die"

Another continuation of the previous bridge. This is a few of the 'evolved' becoming saddened that their friends can't join them, so they join their friends. They go back to defending the 'heroes'. Finally, the ones who stayed above the crowd and simply say '[the] Heroes left you to die".

And that's my 39 cents.
