I believe this song is actually about his child. This is what makes Tony such a good writer. I think he wrote it as a sort of apology for being on tour, but he made it deeper, about expecting his death. It's really is inspiring to think that he died only a couple years later. Like for Fiona. If I'm not mistaken anyways.
In regards to the Hitchhiker quote... I don't remember that exact quote... but the original book and movie was basically about a guy who had to leave the planet to (sort of) save the planet... Tony was out there saving the world with his songs. More specifically, i feel it just means he saw that she was wondering why he was always away, or at least knew that she would wonder that, woke up (out in space somewhere), and wrote a song about it.
