Cover art for Heavy Bells lyrics by J Roddy Walston & The Business

I asked J Roddy on his Facebook page about some of the phrases he used in this song and their meaning. Though he didn't answer all my questions he did answer a few and it helped me interpret the rest:

J Roddy Walston and The Business: Chop talking is a hunting reference. The word Catholic can be used to mean "universal". Muscle holler and moan would be how I describe my singing.

Song Meaning

As a "former" Catholic (they claim once in, like the Mafia, you are ALWAYS in), this song's meaning is obvious to me! The usual dichotomy of "good Catholics" who love sex but feel guilty about it outside of marital procreation. I get an image of someone naked, in bed with their lover early in the morning, being BLASTED awake by the local church's Matin bells...and the SOUND makes them feel guilty about what they have been doing...so Catholic! Do the "sin," enjoying the moment, and then feel terrible about it later.

your post is very helpful! it backs up my insertion they don't want to explain, they want you to make up your own meaning . . . but they don't mind helping or clearing some cobwebs . . . thanks
