I find it interesting that the first verses end with "needed nothing it had" but with the swan "needed nothing she could give" implying that she had something needed but wasn't able to give it. I wonder what it could be?

My Opinion

I think the swan is a constant character in Mr. H's work, as the owl. Maybe it's the same swan from Swanheart and all of the other songs which mention a swan-hearted person.

Maybe he is indeed talking about his love experiences in the past with the 4 birds, or not just love experiences, but key relationships for his development as in who he is nowadays. The swan was someone who could gave something but refused or wasn't able to share it with him, in contrast with the other birds, who did shared or were willing to share with him...

@Katalia I can't shake the idea that the "Swan of white" is Tarja. Because "Lady in white" and also because he believes she did have something during the early days of Nightwish but in the end couldn't give it to him. Also from random sites found googling "swan symbolism":

ockquote>

Swan symbolizes grace and beauty on many levels. It is associated with love, music, and poetry.

@Alexander2 You may be onto something about Tarja.
