This is one of my favorite songs, it's an incredible tune. I think the song is about the murkiness around finding the woman of your dreams and how it gets mired in day to day reality. He's found someone that he clearly loves, "I'd run away with you baby," but at the same time, in reality it's not quite perfect, "kind of what I had in mind, but what I had in mind was strong." As if he's quite certain that he's not certain what he's found. Even the beauty of having a son, isn't strong enough to keep together what he's no longer certain of, "you said a couple things to me" which was enough to fuel his doubt, but despite it all, there's a yearning to run away with her, if she'd only hint that's what she wants. It's as if they have these inner souls that yearn for each other, yet their external selves are imperfect and despite having a child, they're not going to make it... so hopeful, yet so sad...
@emrob you might be right there. I had wondered if the baby boy was a mistake....... but I suspect it might have been more like you say, how some relationships fail to stand strong in the face of day to day reality after the new romance phase ends. With a little boy myself (and a girl) it is sad to think about how many couples split when children are very young.

But for me the melody in this song is just so beautiful - it rattles around in my head for days. I love the gentle pause after 'I'd run...

So he could be singing about just about anything and I'd probably love this song, just for that melody (which is a bit ironic given this is a lyrics website!)
Been a while since your post - maybe it's time to put this song on for a listen :-)
