I've always thought of this song be based on a person who had been pushed away by society that guy that "doesn't fit in". His anger began at home with problems in his family and his lack of friends. He has tried to fit in by achieving things but he doesn't feel complete. He looks around at society but all he sees is what's wrong with it so he's tired of being a reject so he wants to "leave his mark" as he "dissapears" he isn't scared of what he is going to do he just feels like he doesn't belong. Ultimately he goes off to commit mass murder before committing suicide hence "it may seem cynical". As rash as my interpretation may seem I see it this way because of how many killings there have been in the past because that one person was pushed around so much that he/she couldn't take it anymore and when he/she lashed back at society it was devastating.
