The wolf can numb the vulnerable side in her and she fears this side.. so she turned into that wolf, which gives her power! Her old real self gets cold and emotionless and frozen , then "falls into peaces" (dies) but she takes that sacrifice to face her predators and to control who they'll get to see/ get to know.
After the chase when she's alone she can easier deal with life and the wounds.
That's my interpretation of the song although it sounds a little like you could refer it to multiple personality disorder.
