Honestly, I don't see it as a breakup. Rather a relationship that pretty much everyone, but the couple, doesn't think highly of.
In the first set, he covers that even they don't have it clearly hashed out what their relationship is about or for. But even though everyone is gunning for them to break up, and the bullets (gossip? rumors?) fly, he begins to see her for who she is and while their relationship is gonna end... rather badly, at that... he finally has a clear idea of what he wants out of a relationship.
