I think this song perfecty fits into people's thoughts when they are in their last year of college and they're about to leave and "rise, rise, rise to the meaning of life". They're "all falling out" because they have started to become more selfish and started thinking about themselves in the future, i.e. their goals, ambitions. This can be shown by the fact that the writer mentions that "looking back, looking out are different things" because they look back to reminisce about the fun they had as a group of friends, and look out to the future. They are different things because one gives a sense of happiness, whereas the other is filled with uncertainty.
The writer longs to "go back to old times" and everyone can definitely relate this- as the writer wants to go back when it was all easier and fun i.e. their childhood, but they are now becoming adults and this is hard to face up too.
The writer says "we never thought it would be us" meaning that they as a band never thought they were the ones that were going to make it big.
I think this song perfectly captures what 18 year olds are facing- changes to their lives and not seeing their friends again.
