Fordham Road Lyrics

Cover art for Fordham Road lyrics by Lana Del Rey

Lana went to Fordham University. When she is thirty blocks from it, she is far from where she "should be" and is tempted to go to the crack house it sounds like but knows she shouldn't do what it is she could. There is a lot of Biblical imagery in Lana's music, and the stone Mary is one of them. Mary is also mentioned in Body Electric as praying for her, so the Mary is the figure that she sees as watching over her, and she senses that she should leave through being reminded of religion or even just the thought that someone is watching over her. She asks herself why she is there but she doesn't know exactly why she wants to stay. One of my favorite lines is "Im not gonna do what I hear me say Im just gonna walk Im gonna walk away" this is a powerful and inspirational line I think. It can be a mantra for a person with an addiction, a bad habit, self-doubt, an obsessive compulsive disorder, etc.. It's the greatest day because she has finally made this breakthrough where she realizes that she doesn't have to do what she hears herself say maybe. The tone in her voice lightens and when she sings this line it makes me think that she actually means it is a great day instead of the tone she takes sounding like she is trying to convince herself something, but I could be wrong. And she goes on with her day, buying a cup of coffee, and I don't think theres any symbolism in that just an experience but i'm maybe wrong. She keeps walking in the daytime, waiting for the night because that's when she is happy or just likes the stars coming out. This is just my interpretation of some of the lyrics but it may not be right, but thanks for reading.
