I feel like it's about being unaccepted possibly, or hated, and then pushed aside because of being unwanted by others, so they'd be forced to be alone in their mind and body. Sounds like they hurt themselves mentally with the thoughts of past imagined or real inadequacies, and they feel cripple by this. I'm assuming that by saying 'until they're free', they mean suicide..? Maybe running away from the oppressive atmosphere in some sort of form, that might take their mind away.
