Cover art for Sloom lyrics by Of Monsters And Men

It took some time, but I think I finally figured this one out. The biggest clue is actually the name of the song "Sloom"...it is a love story that occurred in a dream.

"I met a man today and he smiled back at me Now there are thoughts like these that keep me on my feet, That keep me on my feet." --- when she met a man on the street who smiled back. She may or may not be dating someone in real life, but this is how this character slipped into her dreams. And the dream gave her some confidence / positive hope.

"The sea said goodbye to the shore so the sun wouldn't notice The seaweed that wrapped its arms around you" --- this is when the sun hits, the moment when we slowly transition from dream to reality. so this is the end

"The carpet on my cheek feels like the fall grass And I run through the tall trees with your hands chasing me" --- when things in reality go into your dream via touch. in this case, the carpet created the scene of a fall grass

"The books that I keep by my bags are full of your stories That I drew up from a little dream of mine, a little nightmare of yours" --- the man is based on her construction, so, as with all of our other dreams, the characters are our deepest dreams, nightmares, fears and realities

"To be asked to take this plunge, to forgive and forget And be the better man, to be a better man, to be a better man" --- in dreams, our logic goes away and it is like a complete brainwash. you forget who you are supposed to be with in real life. all of the dream is real to you

"So make all your last demands for I will forsake you And I'll meet your eyes for the very first time, for the very last" --- the man in her dream is a one-time romance. They will be together for the first time and for the very last time. So he is asking her: what do you want to make of this?

"So love me mother, and love me father, and love my sister as well So love me mother, and love me father, and love my brother as well So love me mother, and love me father, and love my sister as well So love me mother, and love me father, and love my brother as well" --- I interpret this part as a way to say love my everything, including my mother, father, sister, brother.... A way to describe two people who are completely in love with one another.

Of course, I could still be wrong. But I am in love with this interpretation of this song :) Don't we all have that one we pleasantly dreamed about, who we look back and smile about?
