Song describes my uncle completely. He's not gay. I assume most people with southern family's has a "Bob."
They want to be left alone for the most part, don't really have friends, are usually the family member who stays and takes care of his mother after his dad dies. He's essentially the guy who forgoes his life to take care of a family member, but that's not a big deal because he didn't want the "typical" life anyway.
Bob knows he's different, but it's not because he's gay. I think Cooley makes that pretty clear with the news portion:
"Ain't none of it new it's the same as before
He figures all any of it's any good for's
Keepin' everybody bored till there ain't nobody
Like Bob anymore"
