I think he's talking about leaving something in the world for once you're dead and no one remembers you.

When he leaves the world he won't be there to see himself or look in the mirror. Future primitive means we're living in the future, we have all this technology, but most people's lives aren't any more meaningful than they were thousands of years ago.

@littletree It's "out on loan from the beyond," which dovetails with the next lyric . . ."When it's time to RETURN." "Alone from the beyond" actually contradicts what the song is about. While we're here, alive, we are part of a society and what we leave as our contribution to that society is what remains when we go back across the river, to the beyond. Central to the point of the song is that we AREN'T alone when we are alive. I wish they'd correct the lyric.
