I teared up the first time I heard this song - weird, because I typically don't like their music. There's just so much pain in his voice when he sings it.
I hear these lyrics as him asking someone to love him. He's admitting that he has problems ("It's not my fault, I'm a maniac" "troubled soul"), maybe those that he used to not acknowledge ("it's not funny anymore"). It seems that this may be someone he tried to be with before, but he messed it up because of his psychological troubles (I said, "I'll check in tomorrow if I don't wake up dead"). He's saying he acknowledges that it may turn out badly again ("road to ruin, we've started at the end" "you love my heart more when it's broken"), but he wants to be in it anyways.
"Alone together" to me is him rebutting someone saying "I'd rather be alone". He just sounds so desperate when he says it. We'll stay young isn't age as much as it is staying naive, and not worrying about their future.
Could be way off, but that's how I've heard it! He sounds so sad in this song...
