I dont know about the past of the band members at all but the second stanza sounds like he is describing that he had the perfect life planned for him and then his plans changed when he discovered his love for music or his interest in being a professional. clearing up the possible misconceptions that people may feel (that he regrets this decision) he says that this is where they belongs. <3 and it is.
The third stanza refers to how he feels when he is writing music. he feels like he is out of the world with emotion and expression. he explicitly says that he needs to think when writing the song and that he uses his mind and passion in writing music. (which they obviously do, THEIR MUSIC IS PERFECT) dont leave till the pen is out of ink could refer to the pressure they feel to produce music and how hard it can be to be a musician.
my question is who he is referring to as Andy. hmm

@lanafan Andy was their sound engineer (I think, it was someone who helped with producing their music).
