To me, it's about the anxiety that comes with love. The music is celebratory and upbeat which juxtapose with the melancholy lyrics of repression. "Don't let her know..." Falling in love brings back memories of failures and heartbreak so, although his heart is filled with the euphoria of love's bliss, his head tells him not to let on how he feels so as to avoid more pain. Great song on an over-looked album. (There's also a fantastic live version on Biograph.)
