I was at a concert last night, Andreas Scholl singing Purcell & Britten at Kings College chapel in Cambridge and I suddenly recognised some of the words Purcell set from my Crass listening! Here's the Purcell setting sung by Scholl on Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/track/6SJXxaYb129WnIpey2sZx5 (sadly the Crass track is not on Spotify for comparison). The poem is by the former Bishop of Lincoln, William Fuller (1608-1675). It reads ...
Now that the sun has veil'd his Light,
And bid the World good Night;
To the soft Bed my Body I dispose,
But where shall my Soul repose?
Dear God, even in thy Arms, and can there be
Any so sweet Security?
Then to thy Rest, O my Soul, and singing, praise
The Mercy that prolongs thy Days.
Hallelujah.
