I think this song is about artists, but obviously, particularly about Vincent Van Gogh. He painted these beautiful paintings, with such vibrant colors and beautiful strokes, and everyone thought he was crazy. Vincent tried to speak through his art, but no one listened, he was told he was insane and this only made him more lonely. He tried to paint for others but they rejected him. He committed suicide, "taking his life as lovers often do." Vincent's pain is so apparent in his works, they are full of loneliness and tumbling thoughts. Overall I think this song says something very specific about Van Gogh's art, but about artists in general: Van Gogh had something to say. He was rejected in his lifetime and celebrated afterwards. No one listened to what he was saying. Perhaps even now we don't understand. This song is simply a tribute to this tormented artist whose brushstrokes are forever engraved on our memory, and yet, a tragic story for living artists- when they have something to say, they will suffer for it, but it will always be worth saying.
