Such an evocative song, despite its simplicity...
I think he's trying to say his life is complicated and he doesn't always feel stable or really know what it's all about
(I don't know who's behind the wheel; Sometimes I feel like I don't know the deal)
however he's declaring his love to someone and telling them that despite the messiness and insecurity of everything else, he feels his love is definite.
The second verse to me is using the seasons as a metaphor for his love which is as tangible (and 'real') as the seasons and has developed over a period of time.
There's also a childish joy and serenity in those lyrics
(I carved our names into a tree; I walked on decomposing leaves)
which perhaps reflects how he feels around the person.
Just my interpretation.
Funny how one can glean so much from a song of such few words ^^
