I got a strong imagery of World War 2, perhaps from the viewpoint of a young Russian girl.
"They could see it going all the way" "it would be forever, all the way"
-as in Hitler's plan to take his 3rd reich to world dominance.
"They left the house, and started running"
-Jews or other persecuted enemies of Nazi rule being evacuated or chased out
"You come here, and I disappear
Some how I see something I fear
Maybe we'll make someones souvenir"
-This set really made me think of the magnitude of death and destruction everywhere in WW2, how cheap human life became.
And from the point of view of a young Russian girl, the desperation and fear in thinking that perhaps the best possible scenario would be capture by Nazi troops and taken along as a sort of war souvenir.
"the calender froze on even numbers"
-All the world being turned on its ear, life as it was known ceased to exist as the war escalated to effect all of Europe.
The whole tone and feel of the song really puts me there, gives me chills. Even if this was not the artist's intention, this is what I get out of it. The fear and desperation that a young person in this time and place must have felt becomes so palpable. I guess that's art for you.
