To me this song is about someone who wanted a deep relationship with a girl who is like a black widow (or two faced/hearted). She just devours him. When he goes to her, he is like a mess (meaning he is in love and she isn't, she uses him just for the physical part of the relationship) thus him saying he was naive to think they could've had something more and when he is with her his view changes (he want to end things but he isn't strong enough to do so when he is in her presence.)
He sees their shadows dance (they get physical) and i also hear "door" instead of "dawn" emphasising that he feels trapped with her. It makes him mad that he can't resist her. Everything she does breaks him. His composure, his soul maybe (in knowing she isn't feeling the same) his heart.
I really love all editors's songs. Tom seems like a real deep thinker. Love that their songs aren't about the soppy superficial stuff most artists sing about.
They aren't a "dark" band imo, they are a "deep" one :)
