My interpretation is based on the lyircs, which I think are pretty self explanatory.
There's a relationship, where this person is wondering how they got to that point (end of the relationship). He is hurt, people tell him to forget about that relationship but he is the kind of person who doesn't forget that easily.
He tried to help the other person, "change" them in a good way, helping the other person become someone new and better, he put so much effort into that but the other person didn't change, he gave everything but nothing came back in return.
"Don't say that it's not fair the person you want to be" refers to that, he tried everything to change the other person, but it just didn't work, and it wasn't because he didn't try, but because the other person "didn't want to be helped".
He kept trying and trying until he "forgot" why he was doing that.
And in the end he is really hurt, because he'd lost so much.
