My interpretation of this song is John wrote it about a girl he was in love with during his teenage years (I'm the boy you used to love when you were fifteen). He wants to know what she thought of him at that time because he wasn't famous yet, he was just simply John Mayer from Connecticut. He says "Dear Marie, tell me what it was I used to be. And if you're further up the road can you show me what I still can't see". I believe this is him inquiring what she thought of him at the time, as in what kind of person he was, and he's wanting to know if she can tell him what to expect in years to come because she took a path of life that he wasn't opposed to and actually wanted but he also wanted his dream of being a musician, hence the "Well I got my dream but you got yourself a family, yeah I got that dream but I guess it got away from me." I believe he is implying here that he wanted both his musical dream but also the dream of having a family, wife, kids, etc., a lifestyle he hasn't been able to experience due to the pressures of being famous.
